Founder’s Day features Heritage and Mission

Founder's Day Prayer

Sisters of Providence and Associates gathered at Providence Place on July 15 for Founder’s Day 2018. The event is held annually to commemorate SP Foundress Mother Mary of Providence and the anniversary of her birthday, July 19, 1850.

President Sister Kathleen Popko opened the celebration by stating that this year’s Founder’s Day marked “…the beginning of Heritage Week where we and our institutions celebrate the wonderful beginnings of these ministries….”

In the opening for the day, Sister Kathleen prayed, “O Provident God, we thank you for gathering us today to celebrate and honor…Mother Mary of Providence. We rejoice in our heritage, our founding charism, the spirit, courage, and self-sacrifice of Mother Mary of Providence and the pioneering Sisters who joined her. We recommit ourselves today to these core values in fidelity and prayer.” Sisters and Associates then joined Sister Kathleen in reciting a litany of thanksgiving for Mother Mary “who embodied the name she was given.”

The service’s final reflection, read by Sister Kathleen, encouraged Sisters and Associates “to be God’s Providence for others. For this truly is the best way to honor and celebrate the life of Catherine Horan—Mother Mary of Providence.”
A presentation on the “Live Well Springfield” Coalition project was offered by Mercy Medical Center’s Maggie Whitten, program director for one of Trinity Health’s Transforming Communities Initiative Grants. (See related article.)
