Remembering Sister Maria Assumpta McGrath, SP

Sister Maria AssumptaSister of Providence Maria Assumpta McGrath died on March 9, 2018 in the 69th year of her religious life. Born in Holyoke, she was named Mary Elizabeth McGrath, the sixth of nine children born to Joseph J. and Emaline (Barbeau) McGrath.

She graduated from Ascension High School in Worcester and entered the Sisters of Providence in 1949. Her younger sister Cecelia entered the congregation two years later.


 

Sister Maria Assumpta began working in the X-ray Department at Mercy Hospital in Springfield in 1952 and graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of X-ray Technology in 1957. She remained at Mercy Hospital until she moved to Our Lady of Providence Children’s Center where she worked as a cottage supervisor from 1959 to 1961. She resumed ministering as an X-ray technologist for almost half a century at several hospitals. These included Mercy Hospital in Springfield; St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester; Farren Memorial Hospital in Montague City; Memorial Hospital in Worcester; Norwood Hospital in Norwood; and at Dr. Zielinski’s Office in Holyoke.

Sister Maria Assumpta also ministered as a teacher’s aide at the Holyoke Day Nursery and participated in the clinical pastoral education program at Mercy Hospital from 1977-78. She continued her ministry in the radiology department at Mercy Hospital and in 1990 in pastoral ministry there. Following her retirement from Mercy Hospital in 1994, she loved volunteering there in the Hospitals’ radiology and pastoral care departments. She received her 35-year Volunteer Service Award from Mercy Medical Center in 2014.

Sister Maria Assumpta is survived by her Sisters in Community and was predeceased by her sister, Sister Cecelia McGrath, SP her brothers and other sisters, and is survived by her nephew Frank Branchesi and his family, and many friends, especially at the Mercy’s Radiology Department.
